Children can't Read to Learn until they Learn to Read!!
ReadingPals help build a strong foundation for literacy and a love of reading. By giving just a small amount of time, they help children develop the skills and enthu siasm for reading, which is so critical to academic success.
ReadingPals is a literacy program operated by United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades and Okeechobee. Why does United Way care about helping children learn to read? Because children who read at grade level by the fourth grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school. Children who graduate from high school are more likely to be successful, productive community members.
United Way is looking for volunteers to read to Kindergartners at public schools in Lee County. The volunteers not only enjoy helping children discover a love of read ing, they become their "Pals". They spend an hour each week during the school year talking, drawing, reading and building a relationship with one another. For some, this relationship is life-changing.
ReadingPals 2016 2017 will begin September 12th and run through the schoolyear. Commit to one hour per week at the following school:
Near Colonial and Summerlin
ReadingPals has been generously funded by Carol and Barney Barnett of Publix Super Markets and is a collaboration between the United Way, The Children's Movement and local partner agencies.
