Kiwanis

The Kiwanis Reading Oasis includes 1,200 books for students from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade, as well as bookshelves, a reading-themed rug, bean bag chairs, a stereo with CDs, a padded bench and additional products to support reading. The Fort Myers Metro-McGregor Kiwanis has also committed to provide ongoing weekly reading mentor support.

The Fort Myers Metro-McGregor Kiwanis also sponsors a BUG (Bringing Up Grades) program: Learning leadership through academic achievement. This recognizes elementary students who raise their grades or maintain good grades from one grading period to the next. Students are motivated to excel because they set their own goals and participate in peer mentoring, which involves their classmates in their success. When they reach their goals, the entire class/school celebrates. It’s for ages 6-12. To help fund these two programs, The Fort Myers Metro-McGregor Kiwanis holds an annual 5k run/walk. The 10th annual Calusa Bug Chase 5K run and BUG Crawl on Jan. 26, 2019 at the Calusa Nature Center located at 3450 Ortiz Avenue in Fort Myers. Participants can register online at ftmyerstrackclub.com. Orangewood had several youth from the running club participate in the run last year.
